About Life in Cellville™

Meet Shanda
Hi, I’m Shanda Button, the creator of Life in Cellville™.
I’m a mom of three, a former homeschool mom, a substitute teacher, an author, and a performer. I hula hoop and perform for kids and families at libraries and other community events.
I’ve always loved creativity, learning, and finding ways to connect with kids. Life in Cellville™ brought those parts of my life together in a way I never expected.
It All Started With Mike
Life in Cellville™ didn’t actually begin with a plan to create a science curriculum. It started with me watching a lot of health podcasts.
I kept hearing people talk about mitochondria, especially while listening to people like Andrew Huberman, and I became fascinated. These tiny structures inside our cells help produce the energy our bodies use every day, and I wanted to understand more about how the choices we make can affect them.
That’s when I had an idea:

I should write a children’s book about Mike the Mighty Mitochondrion.
Actually, at first I called him Mike the Mighty Mitochondria until I learned that mitochondria is plural and one is a mitochondrion! That little discovery was probably my first lesson in what would eventually become a much bigger journey into cell biology.
I wanted Mike’s story to be about more than memorizing what a mitochondrion does. I wanted to explore how the choices we make can affect what’s happening inside our cells.

Around that time, my son and his wife had stopped eating sugar because they were concerned about its effects on their health. That inspired Mike the Mighty Mitochondrion and the Sugar Rush!
But as I started researching Mike’s world, I realized something:
There were a LOT more characters living in this cell.

So before Mike’s story could even come out, I created Meet the Cellville Crew and began turning the different parts of the cell into characters kids could recognize and remember.

Then another real life inspiration came along.
My son and his wife were also paying attention to the kinds of fats they ate. That led me deeper into learning about cell membranes and eventually inspired Mindy Membrane and the Battle of the Oils, a story about the good, the bad, and the ugly fats.
And suddenly I realized what Life in Cellville™ could become.
Learning What’s Happening Inside Us
I want these stories to help kids learn real cell biology, but there’s another audience I’m writing for, too:
the grown ups reading beside them.
My hope is that a child can enjoy Mike, Mindy, Gigi, Lenny, and the rest of the Cellville Crew while both the child and the adult begin understanding a little more about what’s happening inside their own bodies.
- Food.
- Movement.
- Sleep.
- Stress.
- Everyday choices.
Instead of health being something mysterious happening somewhere inside us, I want families to be able to picture the little world those choices are affecting.
That’s why Life in Cellville™ keeps growing.
What started with one mitochondrion has become books, characters, songs, videos, free activities, and now a complete cell biology curriculum.
And I’m still learning right alongside the kids.

Meet the Crew That Grew From One Little Mitochondrion
Mike may have started it all, but he didn’t stay alone for long.
Today, the Cellville Crew turns the different parts of the cell into characters with personalities, jobs, stories, and songs, while keeping real cell biology at the heart of what they do.
Look What Cellville Has Grown Into
One idea about Mike grew into a whole world to explore.

Life in Cellville™ Complete Cell Biology Curriculum, Grades 3 to 8
The biggest thing to grow from one little mitochondrion so far.
Thanks for Visiting Cellville
Life in Cellville™ is independently created, and I’m so glad you’re here.
I hope these characters help kids and grown ups become a little more curious about what’s happening inside their own cells and make that tiny world a lot easier to understand and remember.

There’s Another Side to My Story
When I’m not creating Life in Cellville™, I’m also a hula hoop performer. Hooping has been an important part of my life for many years, and I’ve performed for kids and families at libraries and community events.
There’s a whole story behind how I found hooping and why it became so important to me.
